About Muskeg Signal

A small news page and podcast built for lower-city Hamilton, and the team that keeps it running.

Who we are

Muskeg Signal started as a weekly note about what was actually happening on the streets around Gore Park, and grew into a daily news page and a weekly podcast covering Corktown, the International Village, Durand and the escarpment stairs. We are a small, local operation — one that would rather cover five neighbourhoods thoroughly than spread thin across all of Hamilton.

The site and podcast are published by us directly, operating as Balla Media Incorporated, and every piece of advertising you see on either was sold by the same small team that writes the stories and records the episodes.

What we do

We publish lower-city news on the website every weekday and a podcast episode most weeks, and we sell three fixed advertising placements against that audience: an episode mention, a section sponsorship, and a longer seasonal package.

Where we are

We are based at 7 West Avenue South, Hamilton, ON L8N 2R9, a short walk from Gore Park, and we report on lower-city Hamilton specifically: Corktown, Gore Park, the International Village, Durand and the escarpment stairs. That is the area our stories, our podcast and our advertising all serve.

If you would rather talk in person than by email, visit or contact us during business hours.

Who advertises with us

The businesses we work with

Most advertisers are small: a café near Gore Park, a shop on Augusta Street, a community group running an event in the International Village. They come to us because a mention from a neighbourhood publication reaches people who are already paying attention to that neighbourhood, rather than scrolling past it.

A smaller number are organizations that want a longer, steadier presence — the kind that suits the Seasonal Partner Package rather than a single mention. Either way, the placement is built around the same audience: people who live, work or walk through lower-city Hamilton.

Who provides the services

Editor & podcast host

Writes and edits the news page, records and hosts the weekly episode, and reads every approved sponsor script personally.

Advertising coordinator

Handles bookings, builds placement mock-ups, keeps the shared calendar for the Seasonal Partner Package, and sends every reporting figure.

Before you book

What we need from you

To draft a script or a section credit we need: your business or organization name, the message you want said, any dates that matter (an event, a season, an opening), and one contact who can approve the wording. For the Seasonal Partner Package we also ask for a rough sense of the months you want covered before the kickoff call.

Pricing note

On our prices

The three prices listed on our Advertise page are fixed and cover the format described there in full. We do not quote a different rate for the same placement — the figure you see is the figure you pay.

What we don't do

What isn't included

We do not write news coverage in exchange for advertising, and a paid placement never changes how a story about your business is reported. We also do not sell placements outside lower-city Hamilton, and we do not offer a fourth format beyond the three on our Advertise page.
